Why do people sound so surprised when they hear of this? You can't 'visit' a doctor without spending close to $100. While that might be pocketchange to most, for those who have no insurance, or worse, no job, it's a lot!

I currently have coverage with BCBS of florida, but the first time (3 years ago) i applied to them they declined coverage due to a pre-existing condition of UC. Then I reapplied with a letter from my doctor and they accepted me but with the exclusion of anything related to my preexisting condition of Ulcerative Colitis.
I currently need a colonoscopy but to pay for one myself would cost at least $5000....which makes me continue to put it off, thereby increasing my chances for colon cancer...When will people like myself be able to get our current health insurance companies to cover our pre-existing conditions?

Loved the article. One other thing that would be helpful to everyone reading is if you could please explain what the difference is between dementia and Alzheimer's Disease.

Even worse, imagine after all that debt, what if the doctor gets trapped in a malicious or random peer review that destroys the doctor's career? The criteria to start such an eliminative process are so vague that almost any physician or a surgeon in the US who treats sick patients can qualify. All it takes is to have some patients who get into complications, which is of course unavoidable with best care and intentions. The problem is that it is almost impossible to predict which hospital has collegial and supportive staff, and which is a good ol' boys' club till you get in and try, risking your career. Keep your eyes open and have a lot of luck if you want to not only become a doctor, but also stay in the profession.

Middle aged women are killing themselves because our society throws them away .They sit in the corner of rooms totally ignored, never asked how they are or how they are creating fun and interest in their lives. There are no social programs directed at middle aged women. Our migrant society offers no secure community to draw from when family or other loved ones are not around or have died.

I see quite a few middle age women taking precription drugs that only help to increase weight gain and lower self esteem. This unhealthy trend is fairly widespread among the over 50. Middle age women need to take time out for themselves to eat healthy, excercise and take up hobbies/sports and start caring more about better holistic healthy choices

So I just found out that Obama's healthcare bill got passed, and by 2014 everyone will be required to get health insurance or be fined. I know there are also supposed to be provisions within the bill for people who cannot afford to pay for health insurance. Currently, my husband is the only one working, and his employer does not offer health insurance. Things are really tight for us right now financially. My question is, now that this bill has been passed, what are the steps that we take in order to get health insurance (and be able to get assistance paying for it?). I want to get health insurance, but I want to make sure that we take the most affordable route for our financial situation. We're both very young, and this is the first time for both of us ever dealing with having to get insurance, so being required to have it is a little scary. I'm just afraid of getting duped into buying it at a way more expensive price than necessary, and getting into real financial trouble. If anyone can tell me where we need to start it would be very helpful.
